Neighborhoods
We live
here now. Although if we were one block east, we'd technically be
here.
Good golly this block is quiet. There are actual kids, all kinds of dogs, and even squirrels. A fat crow spends his time stomping around on a rooftop nearby, and the cats keep drooling out the windows at the many small juicy birds. Our block is mostly Victorians, with a few small multi-unit buildings. There are gardens. The new place is wedged into a miniature lot and doesn't really have a yard, but the back stairs make a nice enough place to admire other people's handiwork.
I'm still figuring out this landlord thing. Although the tenant is perfect — neither chatty nor unfriendly. Just wants to pay her rent and be left to live the life she's had for the past nine years. Both flats are way small (although not as small as the mini-loft I almost went for) and the building is, erm, acoustically quirky. But I'm starting to relax a little.

Offline?
Moving day is tomorrow!
Dunno when I'll have connectivity again. I have to get online to work, so it'll be from cafes if nowhere else.

Busy
Packing stuff, painting stuff, making multiple trips to Home Depot, Urban Ore, and Discount Builders Supply. All while juggling four separate programming/admin gigs (not counting the potential book). I'm dizzy.
Most fun so far? Salvage yards! Especially splashing through the rainy yards with W yesterday, checking out the amazing junk, and finding a great stainless double sink for the kitchen for $35.00.
Least fun? Money anxiety, time pressure, and the inevitable relationship stress that comes at this series of "firsts". First move, first time decorating together, first time painting together. We're doing pretty dang well, but nothing's ever completely smooth at times like this.

What's with Abby and the quizzes?
And what's with me, going along with them? Shouldn't
she be working on her dissertation? Shouldn't I be working on my book outline, or writing search-engine code for lawyers or something?

Go NY!
One more
baby step towards
marriage equality. Let's see how the appeal goes.
Disturbing factoid: The U.S. Supreme court didn't outlaw individual states' bans on interracial marriage until
1967. In 1964, Virginia
upheld a law making interracial marriage a felony. Cuz, you know, that's what god wanted.

Craig
Jason's older brother died this week. They don't know why yet, but it looks like natural causes.
It's beyond awful.
I've been hovering aimlessly on
tribe today, between work tasks, sort of waiting for the announcement.
I'm really glad I got to know him. He was a big, earnest, sometimes-dorky, incredibly warm guy. If you met him, you knew he was genuinely interested in what you had to say. I loved driving him home on Christmas, chatting and receiving the ritual "I love you guys" as farewell. I felt like I
was family to Craig, and I don't care how lame it sounds: I cherished that feeling.
I was dealing with my own family this weekend, and I thought about J's folks. I remember thinking "dangit, I don't get to spend holidays with Craig anymore".
And, dangit, now none of us do.
